Iara- I love your artwork, I did read a comment you made however.
It is a misconception to say that we pick classes for college. Just like most places, if you go for a certain degree you have a set group of classes with very few optional- I think out of a four year bachelor degree you may get to pick 3 or four optional courses depending on what your degree is.
I am in Full Sail University for a bachelors in Game Art. So far I am a little over a year from graduating and only I think one class was an optional one- the rest are fixed. If they weren't I would probably not have taken most of the object design aspects as I have very little interest in my whole career focusing on props. I am glad I didn't however because it's likely the company I want to work for will have me doing mostly props and scenery styled art which is the opposite of what I wanted: Character concept.
I still want to do concept artwork, but the company I want simply doesn't have a lot for that area and I'd rather work for them than get picky on what I'm drawing and modeling in the end. My passion to work for them simply outweighs the other (which believe me is not an easy feat since it's been my drive since I was in grade school!).
So for future reference: If they are looking to go to expand their art career some good paths in the US college are is to attend a well researched (I recommend Full Sail with all my hear- my previous college was horrible) college and go for media art, animation, or Game Art. Be careful though, a lot of colleges combine two very different degrees under "Game art and Design" which the art and design aspects are NOT the same and should not be put together... and the course is usually mangled with very little aide for the students. Full Sail separated them which was really good and their teachers are readily available to both online students and campus students- and even online you have classes you can either attend or watch the recordings of for most classes. (I recommend attending- the teachers are really fun to talk to!!)
